Montacute is home to approximately 350 people and covers an area of just over 260 000 hectares (656 000 acres). However, the area of responsibilty of the Montacute CFS also includes parts of neighbouring Montacute Heights and Castambul. The terrain consists of a steep topography covered with native forest and grasslands. Montacute had its origins in copper and gold mining, but today is scattered with orchards, market gardens, and several conservation parks.
The Montacute CFS Brigade was established in 1942 and was among the first brigades formed. It operates two appliances and has a membership of about 20 volunteers. Last financial year, the Brigade attended just over 40 incidents ranging from scrub and grass fires to vehicle accidents and storm damage.
