Construction of the West Beach Boat Harbour, 21 May 1998

Within a short space of time after the completion of the West Beach Boat Harbour,
significant problems occurred, of beach erosion to the north and deposition of sand
and seagrass wrack within the harbour.

Critics of the project had claimed that the cost of sand management had been underestimated;
in fact, the actual cost of sand management for the Glenelg/West Beach area is now five times
greater than what was estimated at the time of approval of the Holdfast Shores project,
and is more than the budget for the remainder of the metropolitan coast.
