Beach build-up and erosion

Summer evening, Brighton

In summer, the action of gentle waves moves sand from offshore bars and builds up the beaches,
and also moves it northward through the process of littoral drift.

Winter storm waves erode the beaches, moving sand offshore and threatening development
which now occupies the foredune for almost the entire length of the metropolitan coast.
