Friends of Gulf St Vincent

The Friends' principal aim is to:
Foster a unified community approach
to the protection and wise use of
the Gulf of St Vincent
Aims

The new Friends group was formed in 2003 in response to a perceived need for a coordinated approach by the coastal community to the protection and conservation of Gulf St Vincent, particularly as the Office of Coast and Marine (within the South Australian Department of Environment & Heritage) embarks on the preparation of a Marine Plan for the Gulf of St Vincent - Kangaroo Island region.

The Friends of Gulf St Vincent is a member group of Friends of Parks Inc.

At our first executive meeting, the following objectives were agreed;

1. To foster a unified community approach to the protection and wise use of Gulf St Vincent

2. To advocate for the
- conservation of marine and coastal environments
- protection of key habitats in the Gulf
- sustainable use of marine resources

3. To promote awareness of issues relating to the health of Gulf St Vincent

4. To provide a means of conveying community concerns to the government

It is envisaged that FoGStV could have several functions. As a coordinating group for the Gulf, it could have both individuals and groups as members. Since the NPWS charter covers 'Wildlife' as well as 'Parks', local environment groups looking after dunes and reefs, etc. outside proclaimed Parks that contain wildlife (including marine life), can also become FoGSV members. The benefit of this is access to State Government-funded Public Liability Insurance for projects which are registered through FoGStV and Friends of Parks. It could also mean better outcomes in grant applications.

FoGStV could foster greater public awareness of the Gulf and its issues, as well as greater networking among member groups, by: publicising local workdays and other events through a central calendar; organising excursions to particular sites and visits to local groups; encouraging groups to develop their own websites; producing educational resources, etc.

We welcome participation, ideas, suggestions, etc. And if you would like to become involved, or go on the mailing list to be informed of events, etc., please contact us.
